April 18, 2016: Habitat welcomes Dr. Howard B. Slaughter Jr. as our new President & CEO.
After an extensive search and interview period, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh has named Dr. Howard B. Slaughter Jr. as its new President and Chief Executive Officer. Habitat’s longtime Executive Director, Maggie Withrow, will be retiring from the organization at the end of April 2016, after 13 years of devoted service.
Habitat Board President Michael Rizzo, Chief Risk Officer with Federal Home Loan Bank Pittsburgh, is pleased to welcome Dr. Slaughter to the organization. “Our Habitat chapter is going through significant change with having to replace a longtime Executive Director and working to find a permanent solution for the ReStore while continuing to focus on providing a decent home to families in need in our community,” said Mr. Rizzo. “The Board and I are thrilled that we were able to attract someone with Dr. Slaughter's knowledge, reputation and experience. I'm excited to see how we can work together to execute the Habitat mission in bigger and better ways. In the brief period of time that I have known him, I am in awe of his energy, drive and passion. The future looks intriguing.”

Dr. Slaughter comes to Habitat with an extensive background in charitable community involvement, with a focus on economic development and housing initiatives. Dr. Slaughter is the President and CEO of Christian Management Enterprises LLC, a management firm specializing in strategic solutions, project management, small business and real estate development. Dr. Slaughter has previously served in the role of President and CEO of Landmarks Community Capital Corporation, and was also the First Regional Director of Fannie Mae's Pittsburgh Community Business Center, where he managed a $2 billion mortgage plan and assisted twenty-four thousand individuals and families in becoming homeowners in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Dr. Slaughter serves on numerous boards and committees including those of The Pittsburgh Foundation, the Mount Ararat Community Activity Center, the Howard Hanna Free Care Fund Foundation, the Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania and he serves on the Operational Committee of the Pennsylvania Community Development Bank. He is also the Chairman of Bank On Greater Pittsburgh, an Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh initiative, funded by the United Way of Allegheny County. In 2014, he received a gubernatorial appointment from Governor Tom Corbett to the Board of the Pennsylvania Economic Development Financing Authority. Dr. Slaughter also previously received a gubernatorial appointment to the Board of the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) by former Governor Ed Rendell and later became Chairman of the Policy Committee of PHFA.
Dr. Slaughter holds an Associate in Science degree in Financial Services with emphasis on Finance, Insurance and Real Estate from Community College of Allegheny County, a Bachelors of Arts degree from Carlow University, an MBA from Point Park University, and a Master’s degree in Public Management from Carnegie Mellon University’s H. John Heinz, III School of Public Management. He also holds a Doctor of Science degree in Information Systems and Communications from Robert Morris University (RMU), where he was named a Distinguished Alumnus in the School of Communications and Information Systems and served as a member of the President’s Council. Dr. Slaughter has participated in multiple well-known executive leadership programs including the Governing for Non-profit Excellence program at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Business Administration and the Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He is a graduate of Leadership Pittsburgh, class IX and served on its board of directors after completing the class.
He has received numerous local, regional, educational and national awards for his charitable and community work. His most recent honors include TALK Magazine’s Pennsylvania Influential African American Executive in 2015 and the Small Seeds Development, Inc.’s contribution to families and community-at-large award in 2014. Habitat’s board, staff, partner families, and volunteers welcome Dr. Slaughter to the Habitat family and look forward to serving under his dynamic leadership.
