May 13, 2015: Habitat staff and friends gather for a house blessing at the start of work on a Habitat house in Penn Hills.
HFHGP received a call in April about the possibility of doing a Habitat house in honor of the beloved Pope Francis, the inspirational leader of the Roman Catholic Church. The anonymous donor offered $60,000 for the rehabilitation of the Habitat house on Bart road in the Penn Hills.
The purpose of the Pope Francis House is threefold:
1. To honor Pope Francis for his commitment to social justice and reinvigorating the Catholic Church;
2. To provide a unifying, celebratory opportunity for Catholic and non-catholic volunteers to work together to toward a common goal (as Pope Francis says, "Work confers dignity."); and
3. To further Habitat's mission of building and preserving homes.
On May 13th, HFHGP kicked-off the rehabilitation project with a house blessing. Don's Appliances, a generous $10,000 donor to the project, gathered at the house, along with Habitat office and construction staff. Don's Appliances management led a "Prayer of Shelter" blessing over the home
Donut Connection and Dunkin' Donuts provided coffee and donuts to celebrate the start of work on this house and then volunteers got to work planting rose bushes and starting on repairs for the house.
