Global Village Trip 2015

May 19, 2015: Nine volunteers participate in a Global Village trip to Romania.

On May 8, a team of nine volunteers, including two Habitat staff members, set out for Romania to participate in a Habitat Global Village Trip. Derek and Jenn Kendall-Morris led the group that also consisted of Anna Sella, Megan Sherry, Brian Root, Emily Shearer, Nicole Zeak, Anthony Sallo, and Colleen Cadman. The Global Village volunteer program links Habitat affiliates around the world. Previously, HFHGP participated in a Global Village trip to Brazil (2013). For this second trip, the HFHGP connected with the Habitat for Humanity of Romania Cluj affiliate, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania during the ten day stay.

The team worked on a project that involved eight duplex homes that will ultimately house 16 Romanian partner families. They worked alongside the Romanian construction crew for five days, helping with framing, drywalling, putting up plywood, building roof trusses, completing stucco on the exteriors, among other tasks. The total project is expected to be completed by October of this year.

Of course, the trip included some down time and sightseeing as well. The team explored Budapest, Cluj, and the medieval fortress town of Sighisoara. They greatly enjoyed learning about Transylvanian culture while sightseeing, trying the local cusinies, and even partaking in a dance lesson taught by the Habitat Cluj construction supervisor.

A big thank you to Team Leaders Jenn and Derek for organizing the trip, the friends and families of team members who donated financially to make the trip possible, and the Habitat Cluj team (Cosmina, Vio, Getta, Stolo, and Adi) for being excellent and patient teachers and hosts. What a memorable trip!
